Fortum: Final investment decision on Sørfjord wind farm

The 96.6 MW project will consist of the largest turbines - when measured in MW - ever erected in Norway.

Sørfjord wind farm, in Tysfjord municipality, will consist of 23 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each with a nominal effect of 4.2 MW. With that, the turbines are the largest, in nominal effect, ever erected in Norway.

  • This is another, great day for Norwegian wind, Øyvind Isachsen, CEO of NORWEA says.
  • First of all, we’d like to congratulate Fortum and their partner Nordkraft with this landmark decision. Sørfjord is a unique project, and this constitute a sizeable contribution to the Norwegian power production, Isachsen continues.
  • It’s also a huge day in terms of technology development: The turbines to be erected at Sørfjord, will be the new 4,2 MW machines from Siemens Gamesa. Once again, the industry is pushing the efficiency of wind power. The increase in nominal effect means fewer turbines, less roads, and a further reduction of the impacts of wind power.

3 GW wind power

With today’s decision, there are now 400 turbines in process of being erected in Norway, totalling 1446,3 MW. Including the 1052 MW currently in operation, Norwegian wind power is fast closing in on the 3 GW mark.

  • Our guiding remains constant, with a further 1000-1400 MW of Norwegian wind power to reach financial close within the certificate market. That will bring Norwegian wind power to a level around 3,5 GW of installed capacity, yielding approximately 12 TWh in a normal year, by 2020, Øyvind Isachsen concludes.
